My girls and I were on a trip to an escape room to Escape to Cadettes. We got to the room early and had time to burn. My mother lives just across the street. We walked over and she quickly pulled out pictures of me and her scouting together. My girls giggled and loved seeing me as a young Girl Scout. There were smiles all around. I'll remember always this special time.JadedCuphttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18048278198981416270noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7478607475979605000.post-72389797802778223112016-05-14T06:46:35.022-04:002016-05-14T06:46:35.022-04:00I am almost 70 years old and am fortunate to still...I am almost 70 years old and am fortunate to still have my mom. She is an amazing woman with more energy than I will ever possess. She could cook just about anything and make it taste great, which was a bonus as money was kind of tight when I was a kid. She and my dad never turned away any of our friends who were hungry or needed a place to stay. nazknazkathttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05249163724400769302noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7478607475979605000.post-77618727420788637522016-05-14T01:23:38.366-04:002016-05-14T01:23:38.366-04:00Though my mother passed eight years ago, I feel he...Though my mother passed eight years ago, I feel her touch in the kitchen (yes, Mom, I mastered your famous lasagna and Easter ham pies
as well as when I feel your approval when I make a change in the home I grew up in, and smell your Nina Ricci cologne when I've echoed your words and wisdom. My Mom was a fabulous cook, not just a cook, but a wonderful baker. Her Mom, in the early 1900's went to a cooking and baking school and she taught my Mother so much about pastry especially. I didn't even realize until I was at least ten that not all mother's made all of their own homemade bread, rolls, donuts, and all pastries. My mother cooked and baked everything you can think of and she taught my two sisters and me to know how to do everything as well. We all love to cook and bake to this day, (although going out to dinner holds a big appeal in my older years), and there is not much that we have not made or at least tried to make. We didn't have some of Mom's recipes, so for years we have tried to replicate a few things that she made that I guess we didn't pay strict attention to when she was showing us how to make it or we would know the ingredients now. It was a wonderful time to bond with our Mom; that is most likely what made all of this time together in the kitchen so wonderful and rewarding. I have been so blessed, as both of my sisters have been, to have been taught something that we never realized as a young girl how important it would be for the rest of our lives and how happy it has made our families and many friends. I can remember asking for particular cookbooks for my birthday and Christmas as I loved to read them at night. That was before cozy mysteries of course!!!!!
Thank you for the chance to tell you a little of my Mom and how her teaching three daughters about food has meant so much to all of us over the years.
If only we had paid strict attention to how a certain white cooked fudge came to be one of the things we all wish we could make now, with the same flavor as my Mom and Grandmother had made. This was due to WWII which she participated in while defending her home country of England. She met my Dad after the war ended & they emigrated to Canada. Mom is 96 this year & is truly a remarkable lady. Still sharp & energetic. She is an inspiration to all she meets. Her wealth of experiences during her life time would sustain any evening of story telling. AND her favourite genre is Mystery! Combine that with her schooling at the Cordon Bleu School of cooking & you have created a sublime resonance. We both enjoy your books so much. Relaxing with a cup of coffee, reading by the window with the sunshine pouring in, what is better than this.
